Shrubs that Work Well in Pots

Container Shrubs

Annuals, tropicals and houseplants are not the only plants that can be planted in large pots.  Have you ever thought about shrubs?  In my shady garden, I have large pots planted with nandina and hydrangeas.  They survive the winter every year and come back beautifully.  If you have sun, summer bloomers are nice:  butterfly bush, vitex, crapemyrtle, and rose of Sharon are a few.  Dwarf Japanese maples and yuccas work well, too.  Trees and shrubs planted in pots have a shorter lifespan than those planted in the ground, yet replanting is easy and inexpensive—and you can change things around from time to time.
