One of the hardest tasks garden designers face is to balance the evergreen with the deciduous (leaf-losing). We look at a winter-bare garden or a garden that is in full summer leaf and have to try to predict what the next season is going to look like. Once all the leaves fall, winter is a great time to step back and see where the “holes” are in the landscape…places where you might want some privacy or to block something unsightly…or something interesting to enhance a particular view out a special window in your house. Or maybe there just aren’t enough evergreens in your yard. (Personally, I love lots of evergreens because I hate the bareness of winter. But you might like it.) So take some time this winter and really take a look at your “winter” garden and see if there are spots that might need some interest.
Questions on anything? Let me know.
My ‘Curb Appeal’ episode will re-air on Saturday, November 7, at 12:30pm. The ‘Curb Appeal’ shows have all recently included two designers on most episodes: the “façade” designer, for improvements to the house itself; and the landscape designer. Our episode starts with the façade designer, Yvette Piaggio, first and I come in later in the episode. This has confused some people.
Have a great Fall and best regards,
