The Wilmington Garden

Many of you know that I spend a lot of time in Wilmington, NC, throughout the year, especially in my off-seasons (January/February and July/August). We have a beautiful garden down there. It is very different from the garden up here. The garden here is a woodland garden, built on a steep hillside under huge, old trees—very shady, and built more around evergreens combined for texture and shades of green. There is color scattered in throughout the seasons. In Wilmington, we have a flat lot, sandy soil and lots of sun, so flower color is our big thing there. We love especially Zinnias and Marigolds and I don't think it's a stretch to say we have thousands. We're in Zone 8a/8b there, so it's fun to grow the sub-tropicals that are more finicky here (though I'm introducing more and more of these plants into the garden up here—and they are surviving the Winters. Never be afraid to try—understanding that one bad Winter may damage or kill some tender things—that's a risk I'm willing to take, personally, zone-denier that I am!!)

We experiment with cuttings and sowing seeds in Wilmington, too, and we've started a little production area for fun. It is coming along. It just gets better and better each year.
